Daily Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: (Sunday - Monday, 03 - 04 September 2023) – Enroute

Report to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) by 8:00 p.m. and proceed to ticketing counter.  Depart Los Angeles, CA on our flight to Taipei.  Lose one day crossing the International Dateline.

Day 3: (Tuesday, 05 September 2023) – Teipei to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

After a short layover in Taipei where we endure the Big Speech, we depart for Vietnam.  We arrive at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport and proceed through immigration, retrieve our bags, and clear customs.  As we depart the airport, we visit the old Phu Tho Race Track, the U.S. Army's 3rd Field Hospital, and head into the center of the city (still called Saigon by most Vietnamese).  We then proceed to our hotel where we have the balance of the afternoon free.  Tonight, we enjoy our Welcome Dinner.

Day 4: (Wednesday, 06 September 2023) – Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

This morning we visit the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Hall (the old Presidential Palace), Notre Dame Cathedral, and the old Post Office (a great place to purchase last-minute gifts and trinkets).  We drive by the site of the U.S. Embassy compound (now the U.S. Consulate) to see the place where Viet Cong sappers blew a hole in the compound wall and gained access to the Embassy grounds during the 1968 Tet Offensive.  We then stop at the Y-Bridge.  Next, we enter Cholon (considered the largest Chinatown in the world by area).  While here we visit Cha Tam Church (Saint Francis Xavier Church) where SVN President Diem had fled and disguised himself as a priest during the 1963 coup.  It was from this place that Diem and his brother were captured, taken away, and assassinated.  Our last stop of the day shall be 197 Ngo Gia Tu Street, in District 10.  Eddie Adams received the 1969 Pulitzer Prize For Spot News Photography for his photo of Brigadier General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing Viet Cong Captain Nguyen Van Lem.  The VC Captain had, allegedly, just murdered SVN Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tuan, his wife and his six children, and his 80-year-old mother.  That 1968 Tet Offensive photograph spurred the anti-war movement to new heights worldwide.

Day 5: (Thursday, 07 September 2023) – Ho Chi Minh City

Early morning departure heading south on Highway 1 we visit the town of My Tho, in the Mekong Delta.  We will take a boat trip on the Mekong River to visit Thoi Son Island, and its local houses, and workshops.  After our cruise, we return to Saigon.

Day 6: (Friday, 08 September 2023) – CHo Chi Minh City to Tay Ninh

We rise very early this morning and head northwest on Highway 13.  Our first stop with be Phu Loi Airbase.  Continuing on Highway 13 we arrive in Ben Cat Airfield.  Just north of Ben Cat is Lai Khe and the southern end of Thunder Road where we visit the Dau Tieng Museum.  We then make our way through the Michelin Rubber Plantation, passing through the Iron Triangle and Hobo Woods to the Cu Chi Tunnel Complex.  Later, we visit the Cao Dai Holy See Temple.  We overnight in Tay Ninh City.

Day 7: (Saturday, 09 September 2023) – Tay Ninh to Ban Me Thuot

Rising again early, we head northwest to view the eerie 3,000' monolith known as Nui Ba Den (Black Virgin Mountain).  Continuing northwest, we make the long drive to Ban Me Thuot, stopping at interesting sites along the way.

Day 8: (Sunday, 10 September 2023) – Ban Me Thuot to Pleiku

Today we head north on Highway 14 past the Ia Drang Valley.  We stop to view Dragon Mountain at the entrance to Camp Enari, as well as Plei Djereng Airfield.  After lunch in Pleiku, we continue north to enter Kontum.  Kontum was one of the major objectives of the 3-prong 1972 Easter Offensive attacks by the NVA (DMZ in I-Corps; Kontum in II-Corps; and An Loc in III-Corps).  Before leaving, we visit Kontum Airfield, the MACV Compound, the Polei Kleng Special Forces Camp, the more than 100-year-old Ave Maria Rosewood Church, and Vinh Son Montagnard Orphanage.

Day 9: (Monday, 11 September 2023) – Pleiku to Qui Nhon

Heading east on Highway 19, we pass through Mang Yang Pass where French Mobile Group 100 was ambushed and annihilated on June 24, 1954.  Crossing over An Khe Bridge, we turn north to view Camp Radcliff.  After lunch in An Khe Town, we continue east on Highway 19, driving over the An Khe Summit and downhill through An Khe Pass.  Arriving in Quy Nhon we retire to our hotel for the evening.

Day 10: (Tuesday, 12 September 2023) – Qui Nhon to Nha Trang

This morning, we make brief stops at the former site of Qui Nhon City Airport and the beach where the 1st Cav came ashore on September 11, 1965.  We then head south along Highway 1 and to Tuy Hoa Airbase.  Along the way to Nha Trang, we view several Cham ruins (the Cham people ruled what is today's Vietnam from the 5th to the 12th century) and other interesting sites.

Day 11: (Wednesday, 13 September 2023) – Nha Trang

We have done a lot of traveling in the past week.  Time for a little R&R.  Today is a day to shop, explore, and relax.  Lunch and dinner are on our own.

Day 12: (Thursday, 14 September 2023) – Nha Trang to Phan Thiet

After breakfast, we head south along Highway 1 and stop in Cam Ranh Bay to visit the site of the former 22nd Replacement Battalion, the former site of the 6th Convalescent Hospital, and the 14th Aerial Port.  We make a brief stop heading south along the coastal highway to Phan Rang Airfield.  We also stop at the Sand Dunes of Mui Ne.  Before arriving in Phan Thiet, we stop at La Gi for a Kodak moment.

Day 13: (Friday, 15 September 2023) – Phan Thiet

Today we stand down and stack arms.  We enjoy a free day to explore or relax on the beach.  Lunch and dinner are on our own.

Day 14: (Saturday, 16 September 2023) – Phan Thiet to Ho Chi Minh City

After breakfast, we head to Phan Thiet Air Base, home of 2nd/7th of the 1st Cav.  Later, we make a quick stop at HQ, 3rd/506th Infantry, 101st Airborne.  We also visit LZ Betty.  Arriving back in Saigon the balance of our day is free, but tonight all hands are required at our very special Farewell Dinner.

Day 15: (Sunday, 17 September 2023) – Departure

After a late breakfast, we head to Tan Son Nhat Airfield (once the busiest airport in the world) for our flight to Taipei.  Departing from Taipei, we gain a day enroute to the continental United States by re-crossing the International Dateline, arriving in the U.S. this same day.
